In this imaginative program title “Canvas” of works for reed quintet, we explore how composers create musical paintings, deliberately and sometimes surprisingly exploring our ensemble’s many nooks and crannies to dig out a massive diversity of new textures and ideas. Featuring works influence by dance and electronic music, folk songs, jazz, and more, each composer takes on the reed quintet in their own way, including a thrilling arrangement of Gershwin’s An American in Paris. From the first brush stroke to the final picture, this concert gives the audience a new sense of what’s possible with these five disparate but familial instruments, and with chamber music on the whole.
